Story Post 1 - January 2, 2025
Problematic wells produce less than they should – resulting in lost revenue. You cannot determine which wells to fix unless you know which wells have problems.
Fixing the wrong wells wastes money and erodes trust.
Gas-lifted wells hide their inefficiencies.
Broken pumps and dead wells are obvious. Problematic gas-lifted wells produce less than they should – resulting in lost revenue. Identifying poorly performing wells in a gas-lifted field is time-consuming.
A complete analysis will take 2 – 4 hours per well. Given staff constraints, operators focus on immediate, obvious problems and do not have time to find all the underperforming wells in a field.

Story Post 2 - January 13, 2025
“A poorly performing well is a lost opportunity.”
Problematic wells produce less than they could and may also cost more to operate if a problem such as over-injection exists.
Lost production and higher costs accumulate every day and relentlessly erode the bottom line.
Unless you know as soon as possible which wells have problems, you cannot determine which wells to fix now.
Gas Lift Gurus makes it possible to evaluate every well in a field every day.

Story Post 3 - January 21, 2025
Does it matter if I wait until the next optimization campaign to find poorly performing wells?”
Well, yes, it does matter. Between campaigns, some wells will continue to produce normally, but others will develop problems at some point before the next campaign begins. A problem could occur 11 months before or 1 month before the campaign. What if an operator producing 5000 BOPD finds, 500 BOPD, during annual optimization campaigns? That’s wonderful! However, how long have those problems existed? We don’t know, but we could estimate, on average, 250 BOPD was lost for 12 months — about 91,000 barrels of lost production.

Story Post 4 - January 27, 2025
“Reviewing every well every day is impossible, isn’t it?”
At every critical technology transition, you can first do something faster; then you can do the impossible. Many years ago, production engineers used graph paper for gas lift design and analysis. It took most of a day to make a simple pressure traverse, an inflow curve, an equilibrium curve, and a gas lift design. Desktop computers enabled engineers to do these same tasks in an hour or so. With only modest additional effort, an engineer could create multiple gas lift designs to find the best one for a particular well: the impossible became possible. Yes, it is now possible to thoroughly review every well in the field every day.

Story Post 5 - February 3, 2025
“Why can’t operators review their gas lift wells more frequently?“
Nearly every organization has the following challenges:
- Talented engineers are rare and valuable.
- GL surveillance and analysis (S&A) requires considerable training.
- GL S&A is repetitive, tedious, and time-consuming.
- GL S&A often has a high turnover rate as good engineers are moved to more urgent or lucrative tasks.
These are the root causes of a problem that costs operators millions of dollars yearly in lost production.

Story Post 6 - February 10, 2025
“Does Gas Lift Gurus have a better approach for well monitoring?”
Since the conventional model for well surveillance does not work, we took a different approach. Our solution was to build an AI Intern to perform the most time-consuming and tedious tasks associated with gas lift well analysis. Interns generally have a good understanding of their chosen field, but they lack the experience to handle subtle or complex problems. Pairing an AI intern with an expert can be particularly beneficial since the intern can dramatically improve the expert’s productivity.
Story Post 7 - February 18, 2025
“Is Gas Lift Gurus a “system” for well monitoring?”
Yes. We have invented a human-in-the-loop approach for gas lift monitoring. Human-in-the-loop systems blend software capabilities (an AI intern) with a human expert’s skills and judgment.
The Guru system allocates specific tasks to the AI intern and other tasks to human experts.

Story Post 8
“Is Gas Lift Gurus a software vendor or a service provider?”
We are currently a service provider utilizing a proprietary software system (our AI intern) with expert humans-in-the-loop. Our model is to provide information and advice to client engineers and maximize their success in improving gas-lifted production.
We have avoided licensing our software for some important reasons:
- Our fundamental mission is to minimize the overall cost of finding all the revenue lost in gas-lifted fields. Speed, accuracy and efficiency are all important.
- Like all interns, our AI intern cannot be trusted in every situation. Incorrect or missing data, impossible mechanical configurations, and so on can be problematic.
- The expertise level required to oversee and tweak is very high.
- We want to continuously and rapidly improve the capabilities of our AI intern software, unrestricted by release cycles.
- We prefer to focus on making more barrels rather than training more engineers.
Don’t like our service model? Are you interested in licensing our software instead? We have a solution. More on that in Post 9.

Story Post 9
“Again, is Guru licensing software or selling a service?”
Last week, we explained why we prefer to be a service provider. But we know some companies want to license our software.
We can provide a license for our software which includes:
- Access to the full output of well and field analyses for all client engineers and management, just as when using our Gas Lift Guru service model.
- The ability to customize the system configuration settings to optimize the system’s performance in the client’s environment.
- Access for a designated client expert to the Guru report authoring editor.
- A generous amount of free monitoring and help from a Gas Lift Guru expert in assisting the client’s designated gas lift expert.
Such a license allows us to focus on doing what we do best and allows clients with internal gas lift experts to manage their gas lift surveillance and analysis more independently.

Story Post 10
“We have always done well analysis in-house, including gas lift. I want my team to do the work, not third-party consultants.”
We have been working in well analysis for 30 years or more. We completely understand your desire to keep gas lift analysis in-house and preserve your team’s skills—maintaining that expertise is critical in this industry. However, probably your biggest challenge today (as it has been for the past 30 years in every company) is that there are too many things on an engineer’s desk that are critical and urgent.
Gas lift analysis always gets pushed to the back burner while more urgent matters are prioritized. Delays in finding and fixing gas lift wells cost your company millions in revenue every year.

Story Post 11
“I don’t want my team to lose their gas-lift analysis skills to third-party consultants.”
What we offer isn’t about replacing your team or taking away their capabilities; it’s about enhancing them. Think of us as a force multiplier.
Our fully automated analysis process, running on powerful hardware, is built to handle the tedious work of analyzing your data faster and identifying optimization opportunities that might otherwise take months or years to uncover manually in your busy company. Our experts turn this analysis into actionable recommendations on your engineer’s desk. Your engineers will get the full output in a system where they can probe all the details and ask our experts any questions. We also provide an overview with a suggested prioritization.
By giving us the tedious work, your team can focus on applying their expertise where it matters most: making strategic decisions and implementing improvements in the field.
Guru is a force multiplier for your team.

Story Post 13 - April 8, 2025
“We know our data is not in good shape. Some data is bad. Some data is missing. Data is in different systems. Can we still get help with our gas lift well analysis?”
We have been doing well analysis for decades. During that time, everyone we met had data problems. New fields with great IT systems have bad measurements. Older fields with old IT systems had missing instruments, incorrect SCADA tags, manual data on paper or spreadsheets, and bad data from old meters.
Where most well analysts would take your official data as a given, we have decades of experience examining the contradictions, deciding what data is best and how uncertain it is to make recommendations that lead to more revenue. We are also very experienced in moving data, cleaning data, and automating the flow of data.
Bad data need not be a show-stopper.

Story Post 14 - April 21, 2025
“We use PROSPER in-house. We don’t want to use any other well-modeling software.”
PROSPER and GAP are great tools for well modeling and decision-making.
As a first step in every engagement, we integrate our analysis software with our client’s data sources including well test data, sensor data, well models, and so on. We do NOT displace PROSPER or GAP or any other client data repository – we integrate with your data sources.
Internal to our system, we use our proprietary process, special techniques, correlations, and comprehensive models.
Some clients may be interested in obtaining the inflow and outflow information our process creates for use in PROSPER and GAP, which is possible, although two different models will always produce different results even with identical data.
Story Post 12 - April 1, 2025
“Will your service help my engineers learn more about gas lift?”
Yes. Your engineers will receive complete and detailed reports, including recommendations and all the curves and assumptions that went into the analysis. We learned a lot about gas lift from our mentors, who explained what was happening in our wells using the same analyses. Especially when unusual scenarios happen, there is a lot for an engineer to learn. Our experts will need to actively collaborate with your engineers to understand the context of the data, explain our analysis, and refine implementation plans. There isn’t a better way to learn about gas lift than working with an expert on your own wells.
